Benigno `Ninoy' Aquino, Jr. (1932-83) became a martyr for political freedom in the Philippines after he was assassinated at an airport in Manila on August 23, 1983. In the late 1990s, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation named a traffic triangle in a Filipino neighborhood of Queens, NY, in honor of the fallen hero.
Corazon Aquino passed away August 1, 2009. She served as the 11th President of the Philippines and the "Mother of Democracy", serving from 1986 to 1992. She was the first female president of the Philippines and the first female president of any country in Asia.

EAST RUTHERFORD– To simply quantify and bluntly judge the recently concluded People’s Ball, (held at the Grand ballroom of the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel in East Rutherford, NJ last Saturday, August 8, 2009) just successful is an unfair remark and an understatement … for the glittery affair was undeniably much more than beyond anybody’s wildest expectation - - - actually, another remarkably impressive achievement by the organizers and producers ofthe annual Philippine Fiesta in America, now celebrating its 11th year.
Initially conceptualized to kick-off the traditional celebration of the Philippine Fiesta, the People’s Ball chose Simbang Gabi Sa Katedral, Inc., (SGSK), for its beneficiary… upholding its commitment to support the Fil-Am community. The extreme height of glitz and glam of the social bash was instantly achieved even before the program started and incredibly sustained its frivolity ‘til the end - - - drawing kudos from every guest that later felt adamant to leave the high-spirited ambience even after the last music has played. The regal-as-a-court atmosphere of gowned and tuxed attendees threw all cautions to the air as they waltzed, boogied, did the cha-cha and rumba, tangoed, swayed and swung, and even line-danced with gusto.
The ambivalence prevailed even more with the graceful presence of some distinguished figures in the presidential table which was composed of the Hon. Con. Gen. Cecile B. Rebong and her hubby Bill Rebong, Deputy Consul Gen. Millie Sta. Maria- Thomeczek, SGSK & the People’s Ball over-all chair Rev. Dr. Joseph G. Marabe, JCD, Co-chairs Ludi de Asis-Hughes and Cora T. Rivera, Msgr. Oscar A. Aquino, Bishop Manlapaz of Davao (who flew all the way from Manila), and off course, the indefatigable tandem of Mila and Nanding Mendez, the corporate heads and producers of the Philippine Fiesta.
The most anticipated stately dance, the Rigodon de Honor, became the piece de resistance of the evening and, as expected, was overwhelmingly greeted with raucus cheers and thunderous applause… whereby catapulting the bash to a height of sophistication. The inevitability of the rupture sent the Rigodon participants into such pleasurable excitement and exalted bliss--- fanning away all the tensions that builtup during the early phase.
Another highlight of the affair was the reading and awarding of the Recognition and Commendation Proclamation from the Office of the Governor of New Jersey, the Hon. John S. Corzine, to Philippine Fiesta and Simbang Gabi Sa Katedral.
Having had stamped and etched an impressive mark in the annals of the East Coast social scene, the People’s Ball has instantly found its welldeservedregistry in the Fil- Am social calendar. This early, the People’s Ball is expected to be the most-awaited and wellattended annual event - - - the cream of all social gatherings in this part of the tri-state area. Incidentally, the two day Philippine Fiesta event, the biggest indoor gathering of Filipinos under one multi-sectional roof, happens this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, the 15th and 16th of August, at the Meadowlands Convention Center in Secaucus, NJ. ABS-CBN’s top young dramatic thespians Kim Tiu and Gerald Anderson (of the primetime top-rating tv series “Tayong Dalawa”), the Crystal Voice of Asia Sheryn Regis and the PDA’s 2nd Star Dreamer Bugoy Drilon are slated to perform and entertain fiesta-goers with their own brand of talents and antics. Numerous up and coming local talents fill the roster of performers plus exciting activities to go on simultaneously on stage and the floor.
